CWLA’s rich history of celebrity partners has included the late Eleanor Roosevelt and Averill Harriman, along with a bipartisan and diverse group of diplomats, members of Congress, mayors, governors, entrepreneurs, actors, and entertainers. John F. Kennedy, Lyndon Johnson, and Richard Nixon provided endorsements and letters of support for our work. More recently, we’ve received help from Hillary Clinton; actor Victoria Lowell; Hearst business executive, author, and motivational speaker Bob Danzig; and Blues “It” Girl Janiva Magness. On May 17, 2014, the blues and soul siren held a concert to benefit CWLA and kids in foster care at the historic Bethesda (Md.) Blues & Jazz Supper Club. Ms. Magness is our newest Ambassador.

JanivaMagnessByJeffDunas4 copyJaniva is an internationally recognized, premier contemporary blues and soul artist of the highest order. Her recordings continuously reach the top 10 radio and sales charts around the world, as well as earning her top artist honors from the US to the UK and Norway as the front-runner in her genre. Her life today may sound storybook, but it wasn’t always that way.
Born in Detroit, Janiva was inspired by the blues and country music that she heard on her father’s records. By her teenage years, though, her life was in chaos. She had been molested, lost both parents to suicide, and was living on the streets, pregnant with a child she would later give up for adoption. Carrie, a single mother of five, finally embraced her.
“I’ve been told that anyone who believes in miracles is not a realist,” says Ms. Magness. “Well, you are looking at and listening to one, in part because someone was brave enough to stand up for me when I was much younger, and a foster child at risk.”

In 2009, the Blues Foundation named Janiva the B.B. King Entertainer of the Year. She was awarded Best Contemporary Blues Female Artist of the Year (2006, 2007, 2009, 2013) and won Song of the Year (2013) at the Blues Music Awards for I Won’t Cry, from her 2012 release, Stronger for It. Janiva’s newest album, Original, debuted at #5 on the Billboard Blues chart the week of June 21.
