On May 24, 2023, Bloomberg reported that the House Ways and Means Committee is planning to release a tax package after the debt ceiling has been addressed, and Representative Blake Moore (R-UT) said the Child Tax Credit is “absolutely” on the table and has been part of committee discussions on the package, though the extent of any expansion is still unknown.

Ways and Means Committee member Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) told Bloomberg Tax he’d like a version of the Child Tax Credit to make it in the package. An expanded version of the CTC was passed as part of the American Rescue Plan and expired in 2021. “I hope something like that gets included,” Representative Fitzpatrick said. “Right now, low-income people aren’t even eligible to receive it. It’s a $2,000 credit, and it’s a modest cost.”
