In response to demands for more support on dealing with the increasing numbers of infants born dependent, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSHA) has released a new comprehensive guide, Clinical Guidance for Treating Pregnant and Parenting Women With Opioid Use Disorder and Their Infants.

The guide provides comprehensive, national guidance for management of pregnant and parenting women with opioid use disorder and their infants. It is intended as a source of help and information for health care professionals and patients. The guide addresses prenatal care, infant care and postnatal care for mothers. The guide breaks out into a series of factsheets with additional sources of information. In regard to infant care it includes fact sheets on Screening and Assessment for Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, Management of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, Breastfeeding Considerations for Infants at Risk for Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, Infant Discharge Planning, and Early Interventions Strategies and Developmental Assessments. The guide is free and available through the website.
