Children’s Voice, published biannually in the spring and fall, is CWLA’s seasonal magazine covering national, state, and local news and issues that affect children, youth, and families. By publishing a diverse range of views on a wide array of topics, the magazine seeks to encourage public discussion and debate among those who are committed to helping children and families.

Do you want to publish an article in Children’s Voice? Here are a few questions for potential authors to consider to help narrow their topical focus:

1. What is the topic? This should not be broad, like “teen pregnancy.” It should be as specific as possible. For example, “we would like to write an article about two rural agencies that have developed innovative programs to help pregnant teens in foster care complete high school.”

2. Has this topic already been covered in the Voice? This can be determined by doing a simple search of our recent issues.

3. When would we like this to be published? Magazine articles are typically planned at least two months in advance. The deadlines for the content of each magazine issue are the first of the month before the issue date. So, for example, the deadline for the September/October issue would be July 1.

Once you have addressed the questions above, email Children’s Voice editor Rachel Adams (radams@cwla.org) and propose the article idea and details you have determined so far. She will work with you from there!

Writer’s Guidelines
Please format any in-text citations and references according to the APA Manual of Style, 7th Edition, which is CWLA’s style. Please use person-first, non-labeling, bias-free language (“children with disabilities,” not “disabled child”; “child in foster care,” not “foster child,”) in your article.

Features, which run 1,000-1,200 words, are in-depth treatments of issues, research, and events that affect children, youth, and families and those who work with them or on their behalf. The tone should be professional but informal.

Departments includeSpotlight On (800-1,000 words), which focuses on a new program or initiative being undertaken by a CWLA member organization; On the Hill (500-800 words), which details recent policy-making news related to child welfare; One on One (500-800 words), an interview with a child welfare professional; and Working with the PRIDE Model of Practice (800-1,000 words), which features the work of an organization that has implemented CWLA’s PRIDE (Parent Resources for Information, Development, and Education) Model of Practice.
