On Tuesday, June 13th, 2023, the House Ways and Means Committee held a markup for a series of tax bills, including the Tax Cuts for Working Families Act. The package was eventually passed favorably out of committee by the Republican Majority. The bill would make several tax cuts and would increase the standard deduction; Republicans have indicated that this increase would help middle class families, but advocate groups have noted that people with higher incomes would receive more, while families with lower incomes would receive much less.

The bill does not include any expansion of the Child Tax Credit, which is a popular policy priority for Democratic Members. Representative Suzan DelBene (D-WA) introduced an amendment to reinstate the Expanded Child Tax Credit (CTC), which was blocked. Several other Democratic Members mentioned the CTC during comments throughout the markup, including Ranking Member Neal (D-MA) and Representatives Thompson (D-MS), Chu (D-CA), Davis (D-IL), and Pascrell (D-NJ).
