On Wednesday, February 28 the Senate HELP Committee took up and passed The Supporting Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Act”. The bill, S 1091, has a dozen co-sponsors and is led by Senator Susan Collins (R-ME). It establishes a Federal Task Force to Support Grandparents Raising Grandchildren. The task force would be directed to identify, promote, coordinate, and publicly disseminate information and resources to help grandparents or other relatives meet the needs of the children in their care and maintain their own health and emotional well-being. The task force would be headed up by HHS and has the participation of at least six federal Departments or agencies including HHS and the Department of Justice and the Administration for Children and Families.
