The National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) released “Gender-Affirming Care is Trauma-Informed Care,” a new fact sheet that defines gender-affirming care, describes approaches for supporting trans, gender-diverse, and intersex (TGI) youth, and includes additional tools for providers.

From the release: “Transgender, gender diverse, and intersex (TGI) youth can thrive when they are supported and affirmed in their identities and their identity development, when they have open and affirming school environments where they can talk about their experiences, and when their families are resourced to make the best evidence-based care decisions in collaboration with their providers.”

This release follows several actions in states to limit access to gender-affirming care for trans youth, most notably in Texas, where the Governor has directed the Department of Family Protective Services (DFPS) to consider the provision of this care as child abuse and to investigates parents of trans youth who receive this care.
