On Wednesday, November 15, 2023, the new Children’s Interagency Coordinating Council (CICC) held its kickoff event in Washington, D.C. The CICC was created to coordinate across federal agencies to reduce child poverty and improve child wellbeing. The agenda included remarks from officials from the Department of Health and Human Services, two panels of experts focusing on National, state, and local initiatives to reduce poverty, and a speech from Representative Barbara Lee (D-CA), who sponsored the legislative creation of the Council.

The panel on state and local poverty reduction efforts included Wendy Henderson, Administrator, Division of Safety and Permanence, Wisconsin Department of Children and Families, who highlighted the connection between poverty and child welfare involvement. She spoke to the need to reduce out-of-home care through poverty reduction.
