The Biden Administration has proposed reversing the Public Charge rule that was put in place during the previous administration to deny green card applicants who receive certain government benefits. This rule has caused individuals to decline government benefits that were available to them, fearing that it will tamper with their green card eligibility. Reversing this rule means that immigrants will not be penalized for choosing to receive health benefits, food stamps, and other supplemental government services.
Though this proposed rule may still face legal challenges, immigrant advocates are in full support.
The proposal was published in the Federal Register on February 24, 2022, with a 60-day public comment period.
