CHILD ABUSE & NEGLECT PREVENTION
SUMMARY
Child Protective Services keep kids safe from imminent abuse and neglect and are directed by protections in the underfunded CAPTA legislation. Secondary prevention involves child protection and the prevention of abuse and neglect for children at-risk. Certainly more narrowly defined than promoting the well-being of all children, even this targeted prevention too often eludes our community will and capacity. Federal data reveals that 40 percent of children substantiated as abused or neglected don’t receive services. We must work together to strengthen supports and services so all children are safe.
