The William T. Grant Foundation Youth Development Prize

9/10/2002:   In 2001, the William T. Grant Foundation (www.wtgrantfoundation.org) established the William T. Grant Foundation Youth Development Prize to recognize evidence-based, collaborative efforts that apply principles of positive youth development directed at improving the lives of young people. The National Academy of Sciences' Board on Children, Youth, and Families (BOCYF) was asked to select the recipient(s) of this prize.
BOCYF is currently accepting nominations for the William T. Grant Foundation Youth Development Prize. The $100,000 cash prize will be awarded to the individual(s) and/or organization(s) whose efforts generate significant advances in knowledge while increasing the opportunities for young people to move successfully through adolescence with ample support and care. The prize will go either to local collaborations with national promise or larger scale efforts with proven efficacy.
Prize recipients will be selected based on two principal criteria:
  • Two to five individual(s) and/or organization(s) who have collaborated with one another, demonstrating the sharing of resources, power, and control to conceptualize, develop, implement, and evaluate a program(s) that enables youth to thrive, and
  • The collaboration has evidence of ongoing scientific involvement and assessment, especially of results.

Additional selection criteria include programs that:
  • demonstrate an impact on youth anywhere in the age range of 8-24;
  • have sustained the collaboration for five years or more;
  • demonstrate evidence that the program model has the potential for being replicated and/or applied more broadly;
  • provide evidence of collaboration between several disciplines/sectors, such as health, community service, law, education, media, etc.; and
  • are theory driven and/or evidence based.
