United Nation Convention on the Rights of the Child Holding First U.S. Summit

4/14/2006:   Although the United States enjoys some of the best programs and laws in the world to protect its children, many children still face some of the highest rates of poverty, hunger, and infant mortality in the industrialized world. Abuse and neglect steals the lives of three U.S. children every day, and about three-quarters of all the murders of children in industrialized countries occur in the United States.

In response, the Campaign for Ratification of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) is holding its first national summit in the United States, May 18-20, at American University in Washington, DC. The purpose of the summit is to educate and mobilize support for the ratification of the CRC by the United States.

In addition to morning and afternoon plenary sessions, an integral feature of the summit will be interactive workshops, panels, and artistic presentations organized by and for the national child rights community. These meetings will share best practices for advancing children's rights, offer skill-building opportunities, and provide organizing strategies.
