Promote Library Cards in September and Help Open Doors of Opportunity for Families

9/20/2005:   Where can families go and, under one roof, attend a story hour with their children, find a list of child care centers in their area, browse favorite websites, listen to a classical music CD, trek to another planet in a science fiction novel, or read a newspaper from another country? At the library, of course.

September is Library Card Sign-up Month, and the American Library Association (ALA) has assembled an array of tools in both English and Spanish for communities to use to help families understand the value of the library card.

New from the ALA this year are audio public service announcements (PSAs) and print PSAs featuring actor/comedian George Lopez. The print PSAs can be customized online or for free by local libraries. Also available are "52 Ways to Use Your Library Card," a sample proclamation, press releases, op-eds, letters to the editor, and links to a "Smartest Card" poster and bookmarks from ALA Graphics.
