How Can Healthy Marriages Affect Children? Read What Experts Had to Say

7/19/2005:   The Urban Institute's First Tuesday forum in June focused on building healthy marriages and how adult relationships affect children, and vice versa. An institute director, a sociology professor, a nonprofit service organization founder, and a policy analyst comprised the forum panel and discussed services available for couples in different states.

The panel examined the programs for their effect on policy and programming development, particularly concerning low-income populations, and whether current initiatives are biased in favor of more affluent families. Panelists also addressed the role of fathers, the lack of healthy family models within poorer communities, and difficulty securing funding for and judging the effectiveness of marriage-strengthening programs.
