An E-bulletin brought to you by The Child Welfare League of America

A Child Rights Agenda for the Coming Decade

11/22/2000:   The Child Rights Caucus (CRC) of the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on Children has recently released a report that serves as a basis for discussions between governments, the UN, and NGOs (non-governmental organizations) worldwide regarding protecting and promoting the human rights of children.

The Child Welfare League of America is a participant and an endorsing organization of the CRC and the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on Children.

We at the League invite you to visit Human Rights Watch (http://www.hrw.org) and UNICEF (http://www.unicef.org/specialsession/) to read the entire text of the Statement of the Child Rights Caucus, and to sign your organization on as a supporter of this agenda.

Some of the key points that members of this caucus are highlighting in the document include:

  • Ensuring families are supported in order to provide a safe, stable, and nurturing environment for children.

  • Devoting resources freed by debt relief to the benefit of children, including health and education services.

  • Ensuring that all children, without any form of discrimination, have access to free primary health care that meets the highest possible standards.

  • Encouraging the media to portray positive images of disabled children, by emphasizing their abilities instead of their disabilities.

Human Rights Watch, the convener of this NGO working committee has the task of advising UNICEF in the activation of "practical and sustainable ways to fully implement the Children’s Rights Caucus as rapidly as possible worldwide."

In addition, this site is a resource for many documents regarding the UN efforts to protect children globally.
