CED Makes a Case for Early Childhood Education

2/24/2005:   Two recently released working papers from the Committee for Economic Development (CED) examine the value of early childhood education as a development tool with lasting benefits. The documents are part of CEDís effort to advance high-quality universal preschool for all children in the United States.

One of the papers, Developmental Education: The Value of High Quality Preschool Investments as Economic Tools, examines job growth and economic development and their relationship to early childhood education. The paper concludes that early childhood education offers potential high returns as an economic development incentive for convincing high-profile companies to locate in a community. The paper is downloadable at: http://www.ced.org/docs/report/report_preschool_2004_developmental.pdf.

The other paper, A New Framework for Assessing the Benefits of Early Education, outlines the various benefits that arise from early childhood education. The paper includes an examination of the long-term social benefits and costs per participant at two established U.S. preschool programs. This paper is available at: http://www.ced.org/docs/report/report_preschool_2004_assessingbenefits.pdf.
