Good Neighbor Service-Learning Grants

10/22/2003:   State Farm's nonprofit foundation is now accepting applications for its Good Neighbor Service-Learning Awards, available to youth, teachers, and service-learning coordinators.

One hundred grants of $1,000 each will be awarded to help individuals implement service-learning/volunteering events timed to coincide with National Youth Service Day, April 16-18, 2004.

National Youth Service Day aims to mobilize youth as leaders to identify and address the needs of their communities through service and service-learning and sets youth on a lifelong path of service and civic engagement.

It also serves to educate the public, the media, and policymakers about the year-round contributions of young people as community leaders. Service learning has been shown to improve academic performance, cultivate tolerance, instill civic responsibility, and enhance workforce readiness.

The deadline for grant applications is December 8. For more information about the award, and to view the online application materials, visit the Youth Service America website at www.ysa.org/Awards/overview_parent.cfm
