National Foster Youth Advisory Council (NFYAC) Position Statements
One of the most powerful advocacy tools NFYAC produces are its position statements, in which the council makes concrete recommendations on various issues that affect youth in care. These recommendations are so powerful because they come from youth who have personal experience with the foster care system, and they a represent different states across the country.
The council has produced a number of position statements that address critical issues in the foster care system, including housing, mentoring, homelessness, health care, education, and LGBTQ issues. The documents are so profound that many have been used by CWLA in Capitol Hill briefings and disseminated among other child welfare organizations. Requests for these statements are ongoing.
NFYAC's tradition is to produce at least one statement per year on a new issue facing youth in care. Currently, NFYAC is developing a position statement addressing the problem of youth aging out of foster care with mental health issues.
