Family Foster Care
Family foster care should be a planned, goal-directed service in which the temporary protection and nurturing of children take place in the homes of agency-approved foster families.
Most children in family foster care return safely to their birthfamilies. Those children who become free for adoption may eventually be adopted by their foster parents.
Initiatives
- CWLA is an active partner in the National Foster Care Awareness Project. CWLA provides consultation throughout the year and promotes May as National Foster Care Month, distributing 1,500 promotional packets to our members and others in the child welfare field.
- CWLA has published A Community Outreach Handbook for Recruiting Foster Parents and Volunteers to provide information on conducting a successful community outreach campaign. The handbook will provide an agency with tools to assess its needs and priorities, guidelines on how to craft very specific messages for the public, tips for working with the media to communicate its message, suggestions on how to lead a community discussion about foster care, and other outreach ideas. The goals of the outreach campaign are to increase the number of qualified foster families, retain current foster families, and increase the number of volunteers to help support foster families and children.
