September is National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month
The Child Welfare League of America (CWLA) is proud to support National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month. Each year, the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, along with its national planning partners, urges communities nationwide to promote the message that recovery from alcohol and drug addiction is possible. This campaign raises awareness of the effectiveness and benefits substance abuse treatment and honors the contributions of families, friends, and treatment providers. In addition, the campaign aims to reduce the stigma associated with treatment of alcohol and drug addiction.
Although the official observance is in September, CWLA hopes that this campaign's message becomes a yearlong commitment to healthier living and improved well-being for children and their families. Recovery from alcohol and drug addiction is a critical issue for an overwhelming number of families in the child welfare system. Evidence from various national studies suggests that 80% of these families suffer from this chronic disease.
