Mental Health and Homelessness: Impact on Children and Families
According to the National Mental Health Information Center, "As many as 700,000 Americans are homeless on any given night. An estimated 20%-25% of these people have a serious mental illness, and one-half of this subgroup also have an alcohol and/or drug problem."*
We have compiled a list of resources and publications to help you obtain information about this national epidemic and discover how it affects children and their families.

Resources
- National Resource Center on Homelessness and Mental Illness
NRCHMI is the only national center specifically focused on the effective organization and delivery of services for people who are homeless and have serious mental illnesses. Provides technical assistance, identifies and synthesizes knowledge, and disseminates information on homelessness and mental illness.
- Center for Mental Health Services
CMHS supports programs to help people with mental illnesses who are homeless obtain treatment and other services, such as primary health care, substance abuse treatment, legal assistance, entitlements, and other supports, while making the transition from homelessness. CMHS develops models for programs to deliver mental health services to people who are homeless and have severe mental illnesses, and provides funding to states to deliver support services.
- Health Care for the Homeless Information Resource Center
The goal of the HCH program is to improve health status and outcomes for homeless individuals and families by improving access to primary health care and substance abuse services through outreach, case management, and linkages to services such as mental health, housing, benefits, and other critical supports.
