More than 80% of children in foster care have developmental, emotional, or behavioral problems. Mental health services are repeatedly identified as their number one health care need, and, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 75%-80% of the children who need mental health services do not receive them. The goal of CWLA's Child Mental Health unit is to make children's mental health issues a national priority, provide technical assistance and support to member agencies addressing these needs, and improve the quality of children's mental health throughout the field.
