BABY
ABANDONMENT
SURVEY RESULTS*
Baby Abandonment Symposium
The Child Welfare League of America
October 12, 2000
Washington, D.C.
"* This survey was sent..."
* This survey was sent to public child welfare and law enforcement agencies in each of the 50 states; however, 73% of the surveys were not returned.  The results reported here are limited to those from the 27 responding child welfare agencies.  Therefore, all findings should be interpreted as descriptive and as limited in scope.  In no way should these results be interpreted as reflecting  national statistics.  They reflect the need for continued research and increased awareness of the issue of baby abandonment.
Definition of Baby Abandonment
Discarding or leaving alone for an extended period of time an infant under the age of 12 months in a public or private setting with the intent to relinquish care of or responsibility for the infant.
