May 21, 2001, Washington, DC -- CWLA conducted press events in four states, Rhode Island, Georgia, Louisiana, and Pennsylvania (Click here to view the combined tally of the 4-state poll results), to bring attention to the fate of children's programs if Congress enacts a tax cut that is too large. At each event we released the results of new state polls that were conducted to see how voters thought federal dollars should be spent. The polls have overwhelmingly indicated that the public prefers smaller tax cuts in order to fund programs that benefit children. You can view the poll results and related press releases in the links below.

The results of these polls have shown that voters believe child abuse and neglect is a serious problem, that government has a role in stopping it, and that they would support a smaller tax cut to fund programs that reduce the problem.

In each state, CWLA member agencies helped us to organize these press events. In addition, CWLA is being joined by representatives of Fight Crime: Invest in Kids, a national anti-crime organization whose members include police chiefs, sheriffs, prosecutors, and victims of violence. Local law enforcement officials and crime victims also joined us in these press events.

Although CWLA is certainly not opposed to a tax cut, our concern is that an unnecessarily large cut would have far-reaching effects on children and family services for many years to come.
