February 27, 2007, Washington, DC -- Washington, DC - The Child Welfare League of America (CWLA) is pleased to announce the 2007 winner of the Anna Quindlen Award for Excellence in Journalism in Behalf of Children and Families during its National Conference. The award will be presented on February 27 at a dinner at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, DC. This year's recipient is Sharon Coolidge of The Cincinnati Enquirer.
This award is presented to journalists who have demonstrated a commitment to reporting on the issues most important to children and families. The award is named for the former New York Times reporter and op-ed columnist, novelist, Newsweek contributor, and Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, Anna Quindlen.
Sharon Coolidge of The Cincinnati Enquirer is this year's recipient of the Anna Quindlen Award for Excellence in Journalism in Behalf of Children and Families for her special report on "Lead's Dangerous Legacy" that focused on lead poisoning in children. Sharon originally began work on this story for the weekend edition of the paper and was unable to obtain information from the city of Cincinnati on its lead paint poisoning records. Two years later the Ohio State Supreme Court ordered the city to open its records. She used the information to profile the lives of children contaminated by lead. Her investigation revealed the city health department had not forced hundreds of property owners to clean up toxic lead hazards which caused developmental problems in children.
As a result of Sharon's special report, the mayor and council launched an investigation that lead to public hearings and resulted in a comprehensive plan to eliminate lead poisoning in the city. Sharon continues to report on the property owners and their clean-up efforts.
Since 1920, the Child Welfare League of America (CWLA) has been the nation's pre-eminent organization dedicated to ensuring that disadvantaged and vulnerable children are protected from harm and have the tools and resources they need to grow into the healthy and happy adults we want them to become. CWLA is the trusted authority for professionals who work with children and the only national organization with members from both public and private agencies, providing unique access and influence to all sectors of the children's services field.
