February 15, 2007, Washington, DC -- George Swan III, Ed.D., CWLA's Board Chair, announced today that Christine James-Brown was named as new President and Chief Executive Officer of the Child Welfare League of America. Ms. James-Brown replaces Shay Bilchik.
Throughout her career, Ms. James-Brown has worked tirelessly to help nonprofit health and human service organizations grow and expand their ability to serve children and families through foundation and corporate philanthropy.
Ms. James-Brown comes to CWLA from United Way International where she served for the past three years as President and CEO. Prior to her tenure at United Way International, Ms. James-Brown served for ten years as President & CEO of the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania, where she directed a staff of 130 and managed an annual fundraising effort raising over $50,000,000. As President and CEO of United Way International, Ms. James-Brown was responsible for the organization's global efforts aimed at building and supporting the growth of philanthropy in more than 45 countries.
"I am looking forward to interacting with the CWLA volunteers and staff, its member agencies, and the organization's national, state and local partners so that together we can maximize the impact of this powerful network and further strengthen our capacity to help vulnerable children and families," said Ms. James-Brown.
Ms. James-Brown brings valuable skills and leadership qualities to CWLA. She serves on several boards including the William Penn Foundation, WT Grant Foundation and Public Private Ventures. Ms. James-Brown has also received several distinguished honors and awards. In 2003, she received the Philadelphia Business Journal Woman of Distinction Award, in 2000 the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania "Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania Award," in 2001 the Arthritis Foundation - Outstanding Leader Award. Other honors include the National Conference of Christians and Jews Humanitarian Award, the United Negro College Fund Hobart C. Johnson Award, and the Public Relations Society Leadership Award.
Ms. James-Brown graduated from Rutgers University with a Bachelors Degree in Cultural Anthropology. She holds an honorary doctorial degree from Drexel University.
