August 1, 2004, Washington, DC -- CWLA President and CEO Shay Bilchik has been named one of the 2004 NonProfit Times (NPT) Power and Influence Top 50. The August 1, 2004, edition of the industry magazine selected leaders who are making a difference. Bilchik was selected by NPT staff and a panel of representatives from the nonprofit community. The report describes Mr. Bilchik as one who takes his national vision for child welfare to the local level through CWLA members and as a champion of child welfare issues, whose opinion pushes members of Congress and local mayors, impacting all child protective services.

The report describes The Power and Influence Top 50 as leaders fighting to adapt to a fluctuating economy and the increased need for services, and whose work will, in an election year, influence the way nonprofits communicate with donors as well as voters.

Among the leaders NPT singled out for their work are Diana Aviv, President and CEO of Independent Sector, a coalition of foundations and nonprofit organizations, corporations, and individuals; Joan Blades and Wes Boyd, cofounders of MoveOn.org, which uses the Internet to promote political activism; Bill Gates, Chair and Chief Software Architect of Microsoft Corporation, whose foundation awards millions of dollars to charities each year; and political leaders including Senator Charles Grassley and New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer, who have focused their efforts on charitable accountability.

In addition, several of our colleagues in children's services were also honored: Irv Katz, President of the National Assembly of Health and Human Services Organizations; Darell Hammond, Founder of KaBOOM!; and Roxanne Spillet, President of Boys and Girls Clubs of America.

The full report can be downloaded in PDF format from NPT's website. (Requires Adobe Acrobat Reader.)
