February 25, 2004, Washington, DC -- The Child Welfare League of America (CWLA) today announced the recipients of its 2004 Corporate Friend of Children Awards. General Electric, dedicated to turning imaginative ideas into leading products and services around the world, received this prestigious award for its enduring commitment to the educational and developmental needs of children and families.
Shay Bilchik, CWLA's President & CEO, said, "We are extremely pleased to present this award to the General Electric Company (GE) for its commitment to volunteerism and for its recognition of the importance of early intervention in the lives of children. Their willingness to provide employee volunteers with both a variety of concrete benefits and programs and an environment that supports their involvement in local communities is to be commended. They are a true Corporate Friend of Children."
The award was presented to General Electric at a dinner on February 24, 2004, during CWLA's national conference in Washington, DC. The annual dinner attracted over 1,200 child advocates, representatives from Capitol Hill, national child-serving organizations, foster parents, and child welfare professionals from across the country.
Mark Little, vice president of GE Energy's Products division, was in attendance to accept the award. "It's an honor to represent the dedicated GE people who are helping make lives better for children and families…not just in NY's Capital Region, but around the world every day," said Little. "On behalf of over 315,000 employees, 50,000 GE Volunteers, and the GE Foundation, we appreciate this wonderful recognition."
General Electric was nominated to receive this award by Northeast Parent and Child Society of Schenectady, N.Y., where GE has a long history of providing thousands of volunteers, hundreds of Board members, and generous donations from GE employees and retirees, which are matched dollar for dollar by the GE Foundation. GE and its employees and retirees have donated more than $500,000 to Northeast since 2000.
Dr. James Johans, of Northeast Parent and Child Society of Schenectady noted "We are grateful for 115 years of support from General Electric and its GE Elfun Volunteers and we are proud of their selection as a CWLA Corporate Friend of Children."
"This historic partnership between Northeast Parent & Child Society and GE is now being recognized as a national model, demonstrating the best practice standard for corporate responsibility in collaboration with a mission-driven nonprofit organization," Dr. Johans added. "Our mutual commitment to positive change on behalf of our most troubled citizens continues to improve the quality of life experienced by everyone in the Capital Region."
Criteria used by CWLA in the selection of the awardees include: personnel and management policies that promote the well-being of its employees; giving and philanthropic activities that benefit children, youth, and families outside the corporate family; products that are not harmful to children and families or their physical and cultural environment; and a sustained pattern of national, state, or local activities that benefit children, families, and the community.
