February 17, 2004, Washington, DC -- Hannaford Bros., Co., a supermarket chain whose management understands that families need more than bodily nourishment, has been named a Corporate Friend of Children by the Child Welfare League of America (CWLA). Hannaford was selected for its outstanding commitment to giving back to the communities in which its employees live and work.

Shay Bilchik, CWLA's President & CEO, said, "We are extraordinarily pleased to present this award to Hannaford Bros., Co. Hannaford's remarkable record of charitable donations and sponsorships in communities served by its 120 stores, coupled with their associates' commitment to volunteerism and their outstanding personnel and management policies, establish that Hannaford is truly deserving of this Corporate Friend of Children Award."

The award will be presented to Hannaford Bros., Co. at a dinner on February 24, 2004, during CWLA's national conference in Washington, DC. The annual dinner attracts over 1,200 child advocates, representatives from Capitol Hill, national child-serving organizations, foster parents, and child welfare professionals from across the country.

Hannaford Bros., Co. was nominated to receive this award by the Community Counseling Center in Portland, Maine. In 2002 and 2003 Hannaford sponsored the Community Counseling Center's Annual Meetings and a series of public lectures on topics of interest to the community. The recent series focused on family trauma and cultural diversity respectively. In addition, Hannaford's Director of Retail Human Resources, Lisa Toner, is an active and dedicated member of Community Counseling Center's Board of Directors. Ms. Toner will be accepting the Corporate Friend of Children Award on behalf of Hannaford Bros., Co. at CWLA's National Conference.

In nominating Hannaford for this award, President and CEO of Community Counseling Center, Leslie Clark Brancato, noted the remarkable work performed by Hannaford Bros., Co. "Hannaford truly exceeds all aspects of a dedicated corporate partner with our agency. The corporate world and the nonprofit world have blended seamlessly with Hannaford's values and the Community Counseling Center's values. We both recognize that healthy families are vital to a healthy society, and we value children as the future of our society."

Ronald Hodge, President and CEO of Hannaford Bros., Co, said, "We are proud to receive this prestigious award from CWLA. We are committed to helping our communities become healthier, more prosperous, and better places to live. "

Criteria used by CWLA in the selection of the awardees include: personnel and management policies that promote the well-being of its employees; giving and philanthropic activities that benefit children, youth, and families outside the corporate family; products that are not harmful to children and families or their physical and cultural environment; and a sustained pattern of national, state, or local activities that benefit children, families, and the community.
