March 29, 2002, Washington, DC -- Shay Bilchik, President & CEO of the Child Welfare League of America, will join with the leadership of the National Court Appointed Special Advocate Association (CASA) on the National Mall in a special candlelight ceremony April 11.

The National CASA is hosting the daylong Light of Hope event to raise awareness of child abuse and neglect in the United States. During the event, participants and visitors to the Mall will light 8,775 candles-one for each of the estimated 8,775 children who are reported abused and neglected each day. Together, the lit candles will illuminate the word HOPE. This event and others like it around the country are being held to celebrate April as National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Mr. Bilchik will speak sometime between 5:00 PM and 6:00 PM. Throughout the course of the day, visitors to the Light of Hope display will be treated to musical performances by the World Children's Choir, Duke Ellington School of Arts, Eastern High School Gospel Choir, Suzuki violinist Corazon a Corazon, and the Levine School of Music Jazz Trio. One Church One Child founder, Father Clements, and Miss Washington, DC, are also scheduled to speak. In addition to the speakers and entertainment, the event will include a children's art exhibit.

Established in 1920, the Child Welfare League of America is the nation's oldest and largest membership-based child welfare organization. Headquartered in Washington, DC, CWLA strives to advance sound public policy in behalf of the more than three million abused, neglected, and vulnerable children served by its 1,200 public and private member agencies. To further its mission of preserving, protecting, and promoting the well-being of all children and families, CWLA conducts research, develops standards of best practice, hosts regional and national conferences, provides comprehensive, field-based consultation and professional development services, and is the largest publisher of child welfare materials in North America.
