Child Welfare League of America Commences Nationwide Recognition of National Children's Memorial Flag Day 2001

The Child Welfare League of America is pleased to have brought together all 50 states and the District of Columbia in recognizing Children's Memorial Flag Day 2001. Each of the state governments, as well as hundreds of other groups and elected officials, including mayors, county administrators, social service agencies, courts, schools and community organizations, are participating in promoting the flag by displaying it, issuing a proclamation, or conducting a ceremony on April 27, designated by Congress as National Children's Memorial Flag Day. Promotion of the flag has also taken place throughout the month of April, which is Child Abuse Prevention Month.
For information about whether and how your state or local community is participating by flying the flag this year, please visit www.cwla.org/advocacy/memorialflag.htm, where lists of participants are provided.
Nationwide participation in flying the flag amplifies awareness about the tragedy of child abuse and victimization, as well as its causes and prevention efforts. The Children's Memorial Flag depicts linked silhouettes of children, with one missing from the chain. It is a simple moving image.
The United States House of Representatives passed H. Concurrent Resolution 98 on April 26, 2001, expressing a sense of the Congress in support of National Children's Memorial Flag Day. U.S. Representative Shelley Berkley (D-NV) submitted the concurrent resolution.
