Ways to Help and Other Post-Katrina Resources

Avoid charity fraud. Many charity watchdog groups have created tips for individuals to ensure that their donation goes directly to the organization of their choice. Some of the recommendations include visiting that organization's website directly; don't be fooled by names that closely resemble the name of a well-known charity; research the charity that you plan to donate to; and be wary of telephone solicitations. For more tips on this topic, visit Give.org or Charity Navigator.

Locating Missing Family and Friends

  • FirstGov.gov

  • International Red Cross
Register yourself as safe, or register someone as missing.

  • Katrina.com

  • MissingKids.com
The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) has its own page devoted to locating Katrina/Rita survivors. Or call NCMEC's Katrina/Rita Missing Person’s Hotline at 1-888-544-5475, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 midnight (Eastern Time), seven days a week.

  • National Next of Kin Registry

Housing and Disaster Assistance

  • American Red Cross

  • KatrinaLodging.net
Bulletin board with postings of shelter and other assistance.

  • HurricaneHousing.org
A project of MoveOn.org, this emergency national housing drive connects empty beds with hurricane victims who desperately need a place to stay. Post offers of housing (a spare room, extra bed, even a decent couch), or search for available housing online. Housing is most urgently needed within reasonable driving distance (about 300 miles) of the affected areas, especially New Orleans. But no matter where you live, your housing could still make a world of difference to a person or family in need.
