Job Description:  

The incumbent works as a Child Services caseworker within a Region of the Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS). The purpose of the position is to protect children from abuse and neglect and either maintain or reunify families whenever possible and, when in the best interest of the child, to achieve a permanent home or independent living for children unable to be reunited with their families in a timely manner. The incumbent performs such duties as follows:
•Investigates reported incidents of child abuse, neglect, makes a determination of whether or not the incident is substantiated and develops recommendations to a Juvenile Court for disposition.
•Assess level of risk to the child for additional injury or harm, including whether the child is in imminent danger, and may recommend removal of the child from the family as the situation warrants.
•Performs needs assessments to determine treatment options for families and children.
•Testifies in either a Juvenile or Criminal Court of Law concerning the needs of the families and children.
•Maintains case files and develops briefing reports for the community child protection team, in-office case staffing or out-of-home placement agency staffing.
•Develops plans with families and children in their home to divert children from the juvenile justice system.
•Develops case plans to assist families and children to become more self-sufficient in a safe and nurturing environment and to assure a permanent home for the child.
•Accepts on-call responsibility (includes weekends and holidays) periodically to receive and investigate allegations of child abuse/neglect.
•Conducts home studies, family histories and recommends placement for adoption to an adoption team.
•Recommends foster families and child care homes for licensure and assists in the development of foster home recruitment and training, as needed
The incumbent is responsible for implementing an effective social services treatment program for families and children and to ensure the completion of the program. The involvement of the incumbent has direct consequence in the success of family maintenance or reunification, as well as the personal safety of family members.

Requirements: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university required. At least 15 semester hours or 21 quarter hours in child development; criminology; criminal justice; education; healthcare; home economics; psychology; guidance and counseling; social work; or sociology required.

Salary:
Starting salary for this position is $1298.00 bi-weekly or $33,748 annually. All applicants will be hired in at the starting salary.
Training:
This position requires completion of a mandatory 9 week training session at the Child Welfare Training Institute, located in Indianapolis. All classroom based modules will occur at the Institute, with several “Transfer of Learning” days happening at your local office. Your first full week will be in Indianapolis and you will receive a schedule of the training sessions at that time.
Working Conditions:
 You will be required to use your personal vehicle for work-related travel and transportation of children.
 You will most likely be required to work over the “normal” schedule, including being on-call and carrying a pager at certain times requiring availability of 24 hours/day.
 When you are “on call”, there is a mandatory response time of one hour or less from the time you are notified of a call.
 You may be required to work from more than one location during a given work week which may include travel within a specified region.
 You may be required to fly to other states with possible overnight stays.
 You will be required to maintain a valid drivers’ license and appropriate automobile insurance coverage at all times.
