RE: Nominations for the 12th Annual Anna Quindlen Award for Excellence in Journalism in
Behalf of Children and Families
I am pleased to announce nominations are now being accepted for the 12th Annual Anna Quindlen Award for Excellence in Journalism in Behalf of Children and Families. The award was established in 1995 to recognize individuals in the field of journalism--print reporters, editorial writers, and broadcast news--whose coverage of child welfare issues advances knowledge and understanding of the state of vulnerable children and families in America. Each year, two awards are given, one for print and the other for broadcast. Candidates for this award must have covered relevant issues during 2006 and, as a result of their work, produced positive change for children and families. Winners will be invited to accept the award during CWLA's national conference held from February 26-28, 2007, in Washington, DC.
There are many excellent journalists across the country covering child welfare and raising awareness of important children, youth, and family issues. We encourage you to give serious consideration to all print articles, cable, and broadcast network features. As you make your selection for submission, please consider whether or not the coverage was honest, fair, accurate, and balanced.
The award is named for Anna Quindlen, novelist, social critic, and contributing editor for Newsweek. In 1992, while at The New York Times, she won a Pulitzer Prize for commentary. In addition to her nonfiction work, Quindlen has written several novels. Her thoughtful and impassioned commentary touches on a range of concerns, including many related to children, families, and critical social issues.
Last year's winner of the Anna Quindlen Award for Excellence in Journalism in Behalf of Children and Families in the print category went to Barbara White Stack of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette for a series titled "In Harm's Way" that focused on children abused in some state licensed group home facilities. The broadcast award went to Christine Devine, coanchor of the Fox 11 News - KTTV in Los Angeles, who was selected for her weekly adoption program, "Wednesday's Child." I urge you to pass this information to your public information/media staff, and your award submission divisions. We encourage and welcome participation in the competition for this prestigious award. Nominations are due to our press office no later than December 31, 2006.
The nomination form includes additional instructions on how to submit videotapes or copies of articles for consideration.
