RE: Nominations for the Ninth Annual Anna Quindlen Award for Excellence in
Journalism in Behalf of Children and Families
I am pleased to announce that nominations are being accepted for the Ninth Annual Anna Quindlen Award for Excellence in Journalism in Behalf of Children and Families. The award was instituted in 1995 to recognize individuals in the field of journalism-print reporters, editorial writers, and broadcast news teams-whose coverage of child welfare issues advances knowledge and understanding of the state of vulnerable children and families in America. Two awards will be given, one for print and the other for broadcast. Candidates for this award must have covered relevant issues during the last year and, as a result of their work, produced positive change for children and families. Winners will be invited to accept the award during CWLA's national conference from February 23-25, 2004, in Washington, DC.
Even with the coverage of the war in Iraq dominating the news, a recent search of Westlaw revealed that there were 4,781 stories involving child welfare filed during 2003. We encourage you to give serious consideration to all print articles, cable and broadcast network features. As you make your selection for submission, please consider whether or not the coverage was honest, fair, accurate, and balanced.
The award is named for Anna Quindlen, a novelist, social critic, and contributing editor for Newsweek. In 1992 while at The New York Times, she won a Pulitzer Prize for commentary. In addition to her non-fiction work, Quindlen has written four novels. Her thoughtful and impassioned commentary touches on a wide range of concerns, including many related to children, families, and critical social issues.
Last year's winner of the Anna Quindlen Award for Excellence in Journalism in Behalf of Children and Families was Barbara Walsh of the Portland Press Herald/Sunday Telegram for a series on the children's mental health needs and services in Maine.
I urge you to pass this information on to your public information or media staff, and encourage participation in the competition for this prestigious award. Nominations are due to our press office no later than December 31, 2003. Attached you will find a nomination form with which to submit videotapes or copies of articles for consideration.
