Letter by Shay Bilchik: Nominations Being Accepted for 2003 Anna Quindlen Award for Journalism

TO:       Print and Broadcast Journalists and Media Trade Publications

FROM:  Shay Bilchik, President/CEO, CWLA

DATE:  November 2002

RE:       Anna Quindlen Award

I am pleased to announce that nominations are being accepted for the Eighth Annual Anna Quindlen Award for Excellence in Journalism in Behalf of Children and Families. The award was instituted by the Child Welfare League of America in 1995 to recognize individuals in the field of journalism-print reporters, editorial writers, and broadcast news teams-whose coverage of child welfare issues advances knowledge and understanding of the state of vulnerable children and families in America. Candidates for this award must have covered relevant issues during the last year and, as a result of their work, produced positive change for children and families. Winners will be invited to accept the award during CWLA's national conference, March 6-8, 2003, in Washington, DC.

The year 2002 has been a major one for news about children. While much of the news has been tragic, particularly the coverage of missing and abducted children, more newsrooms have assigned reporters to cover the children and human services beat. Even though some stories may highlight problems, we encourage you to review the submission and consider whether or not the coverage was honest, fair, accurate, and balanced.

The award is named for Anna Quindlen, a novelist, columnist for Newsweek, and former reporter and columnist for The New York Times. Her thoughtful and impassioned commentary touches on a wide range of concerns, including many related to children, families, and critical social issues.

I hope you will pass this information to your public information or media staff, and encourage participation in the competition for this prestigious award. Attached you will find a nomination form with which to submit videotapes or copies of articles for consideration. These materials are also available online at: www.cwla.org/newsevents/nominationAQ02.htm. Nominations should be received by our press office no later than January 10, 2003.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact Joyce Johnson at jjohnson@cwla.org or 202/942-0244.

Thank you for your consideration and thoughtfulness in nominating excellent journalists in your community.
