National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month
Letter By Shay Bilchik
May 1, 2002
Dear Colleague:
The Child Welfare League of America (CWLA) is proud to support National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month. Each year, the Center for Substance Abuse Treatment of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, along with its national planning partners, urges communities nationwide to promote the message that recovery from substance abuse is possible. This campaign raises awareness of the benefits of substance abuse treatment and celebrates those individuals in recovery and those who serve them.
Although the official observance is in September, CWLA is enclosing outreach materials to assist you in planning your Recovery Month events early and to inform you of other events happening in your community. It our hope that this campaign's message becomes a yearlong commitment to healthier living and improved well-being for children and their families. Recovery from alcohol and drug addiction is a critical issue for an overwhelming number of families in the child welfare system. Evidence from various national studies suggests that 40-80% of these families suffer from this chronic disease.
This toolkit features a variety of materials for the media, key constituency groups, and other essential resources. The information is user-friendly and can be duplicated or tailored to your own community to promote this year's theme of "Join the Voices of Recovery: A Call to Action." In last year's campaign, there was a dramatic increase in the number of local events that were sponsored nationwide and we congratulate you on your efforts to increase awareness about this critical issue.
CWLA is a national partner in the effort to raise awareness that treatment from alcohol and drug addiction is possible. We will be involved in numerous activities and I encourage you to review the toolkit materials and to become involved in local events. If you plan to hold a Recovery Month event, please share your experience with CWLA so we can highlight our collective efforts.
