Hannaford Bros. Co.
Hannaford is an upscale grocer with nearly 120 stores throughout Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, upstate New York, and Vermont. Hannaford's management understands that families need much more than bodily nourishment. Hannaford was selected for this award because of its outstanding commitment to giving back to the communities in which its employees live and work.
Community Counseling Center of Portland, Maine, nominated Hannaford to receive the Corporate Friend of Children Award. In 2002 and 2003, Hannaford sponsored the Community Counseling Center's annual meetings and a series of public lectures on topics of interest to the community. The recent series focused on family trauma and cultural diversity respectively. Lisa Toner, a real estate agent for Hannaford and an active member of Community Counseling Center's Board of Directors, accepted the award at CWLA's National Conference in Washington, DC.
Through charitable and community sponsorship programs, Hannaford has supported health institutions and organizations, education programs, including institutes of higher learning, arts and cultural organizations, sports programs, and numerous other civic programs. In addition to daily donations of food to local soup kitchens from each of its 107 grocery stores, Hannaford donates six million pounds of groceries each year to feed the hungry and homeless.
