2008 Western Region Training Conference
Proposal Submission Introduction
Deadline: 5 p.m. (ET) on October 12, 2007
Call for Papers
The Western Region is proud to announce the 2008 Training
Conference in Portland, Oregon. The conference will be housed at
the Hilton Portland and Executive Tower Hotel, located in the
heart of Portland's financial and entertainment districts.
It takes Courage and Compassion to Serve Children and Families, the
theme for the training conference, promises to provide attendees with a
greater understanding of how to be a more effective caregiver, direct service
worker, advocate, or administrator serving America's at-risk children and
families. The stresses, challenges,
and complexities of providing
high-quality, compassionate care
are always present. What skills,
mindset, and perspective are
necessary to prevent compassion
fatigue and remain motivated
and energized? This conference
will present the latest research
findings, novel approaches, and
key skills needed to thrive as a
professional in the child-welfare
field. To this end we hope to
motivate human service workers,
managers, administrators,
foster/adoptive and kinship caregivers,
educators, advocates,
community leaders, policymakers,
lawyers, judges, court staff, mental health professionals, health advocates,
volunteers, and public and private providers to rise to the challenge
to develop innovative service-delivery systems and collaborate to put the
needs of children and families first when designing new programs.
We invite you to submit a workshop proposal for the conference and
to share the importance of this conference with your colleagues and
peers. Come prepared to share your passion, learn new interventions, and
get rejuvenated! The conference will focus on working in multiple systems
(child welfare, mental health, health, education, juvenile justice);
helping children move from foster care to work; achieving permanence;
incorporating mental health as well as substance use and abuse treatment
in work with children and families; advocacy and how it impacts practice;
workforce issues, including how to reduce worker stress; the relationship
between personal gratification and agency loyalty; building a career in
social services; building passion for the work frontline workers do; and
working with children and families of incarcerated parents.
Conference Subject Areas Include:
- Cultural competence
- Youth development and services
- Evidenced-based and promising practice
- Executive leadership, middle management leadership, and supervision
- Self-care as a child welfare worker/resiliency in the workforce
