National Summit on America's Children
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will convene a bipartisan summit in Washington, DC, on May 22 to hear from national experts on recent scientific findings on early childhood development.
The summit will be chaired by Representatives George Miller (D-CA) and Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), cochairs of the House Steering and Policy Committee; and Chaka Fattah (D-PA), a longtime advocate for children. All members of the House of Representatives will be invited to attend.
The summit's goal is to hear from experts on how federal policies can match the latest research so families receive what they need to take advantage of scientific advances. Lawmakers will convene leading scientists and experts in a range of areas, including early childhood learning, health care, and child care. Practitioners of innovative public and private initiatives will be invited to attend to offer research-based testimony to assist lawmakers in developing federal policy.
In addition to members of Congress, representatives of child and family policy organizations also will be invited to attend. CWLA President and CEO Christine James-Brown will attend.
Also attending, is Dr. Judith Silver, a noted expert in child welfare who has participated in a panel discussion with Members of Congress preparing for the summit. She has extensive expertise in young children in foster care, has written a book and several articles, and was on the committee that assisted in developing the new CWLA Health Care Standards.
