CWLA Letter of Support for Kinship Legislation Introduced by Representative Danny K. Davis (D-IL)
August 9, 2005
The Honorable Danny K. Davis
U.S. House of Representatives
1526 Longworth House Office Building
Washington, DC 20515-1307
Dear Representative Davis:
The Child Welfare League of America (CWLA), with our 900 public and private child-serving member agencies across the country, strongly support your newly introduced child welfare legislation (H.R. 3379, H.R. 3380, H.R. 3470, and H.R. 3471).
These bills address issues that will lead to improved outcomes for abused and neglected children by:
- strengthening support for kinship/guardianship placements;
- providing greater incentives to states to strengthen efforts toward permanency for children through adoptions, reunification and kinship placements;
- assisting youth aging out of care by providing them with information about, and access to, services that can help them make the difficult transition to adulthood; and
- improving the national child welfare data collection system by implementing the National Youth Transitions Database (NYTD) and calling for a continued review of the Adoption and Foster Care Reporting System (AFCARS).
CWLA joins with you in recognizing the need to better protect our nation's children and looks forward to working with you as Congress takes action on your proposed legislation.
Sincerely,
Shay Bilchik
President/CEO
