SAMPLE LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Take action! Urge your Senators to support $11.2 Billion for Child Care and to reauthorize TANF

We have an opportunity this year to invest in a stronger future for America's children and families. The Child Care and Development Block Grant (CCDBG), the main source of federal funding for child care, is currently before Congress. CCDBG is intended to serve both families leaving welfare, as well as the many low- and moderate-income families who simply cannot afford the cost of good, quality, and safe child care. Too many families cannot afford the cost of care-or even find it. Congress and the President can change this.

It is important for Congress to hear the message that child care is needed now. Congress must invest $11.2 billion over the next five years in the CCDBG so that parents who must work, can work knowing that their children are in a safe and nurturing environment. At a time when Congress and the President are increasing spending for agriculture, highways, and energy tax incentives for businesses, it is important not to forget children in our list of priorities. In fact, children must be our first priority.

Studies repeatedly have shown that good quality child care-care that provides a loving, safe, and stable environment-helps children enter school ready to learn, improve their skills, and stay safe while their parents work.

With only one in seven eligible children in this country receiving the child care they need, now is the time for Congress and the President to invest in our children and support $11.2 billion for child care.
