LEGISLATIVE ALERT

3/18/2008

Your Representative is Home for Easter Break!

Call Today about the White House Conference Bill!

After CWLA's Advocacy Day in February, the Senate filed it's bill for a White House Conference on Children and Youth. Thanks to your work, we now have a bill calling for a White House Conference in both the House and the Senate!

Your Representative is home for Easter Break - we urge you to call your Representative and tell them to cosponsor this crucial legislation (H.R. 5461)! If you are receiving this message, it is because your Representative is not yet one of the 42 cosponsors so far.

ACTION REQUIRED

Call the Capitol Switchboard to be connected with your Representative's office, and then ask for their in-district office number.

MESSAGE

My name is __________, and I'm calling from _________ agency/organization in _________. As a constituent, I'm calling to urge Representative ___________ to cosponsor H.R. 5461, a bipartisan bill that calls for a White House Conference on Children and Youth. This bill, and it's recently filed Senate companion bill, will focus national attention on vulnerable children. Much positive change has come from previous White House conferences on children, the last one being held in 1970, and it is critical that we re-establish this important policymaking tradition. I am happy to answer any questions that I can, and would like to leave my contact information with you (then give your contact information). Again, I ask that Representative _________ cosponsor this crucial legislation. Do you know where she/he stands on this issue?

And if they ask about the process:

The first step in the process would be for Congress to pass legislation authorizing spending federal funds and establishing policy committees to hold a White House Conference on Children. Funds would then need to be appropriated to establish a series of events and small conferences through the 50 states in 2009, the year before the national conference.
